Silk thread can be used for most handstitching in tailoring, like pad stitching, basting, and catch-stitching hems and seam allowances.  The main reason for using silk, much like using silk fabric, is that silk thread is very smooth and strong, it slides easily through fabric and interfacing and will not show press marks when steamed.
